As 19e century artists used to be trained, I studied in a classical atelier, full time for 3 years. The goal is for the student to paint a full figure from life. The curriculum consisted of 4 stages.

THE CAST DRAWING

You than take those principles from flat to real objects, in this case a plaster cast.

THE CAST PAINTING

Only after getting good draughtsman skills you are allowed to paint. Always from a cast, first in black and white, then with a limited palette.

THE STILL LIFES

Still lifes are the best practice to fully master your colour palette.

  • The Red-Green-White is for studying reds

  • Perishables are for speed gain

During all those stages the student had a session of life drawing painting depending on where they were at their curriculum.
